Thing 7 - Slide Sharing

<div style="width:425px" id="__ss_6510311"><strong style="display:block;margin:12px 0 4px"><a href="http://www.slideshare.net/rhshumate/15-b-overviewruthshumate" title="15 b overview_ruth_shumate">15 b overview_ruth_shumate</a></strong><object id="__sse6510311" width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=15boverviewruthshumate-110110155041-phpapp01&stripped_title=15-b-overviewruthshumate&userName=rhshumate" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"/><embed name="__sse6510311" src="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=15boverviewruthshumate-110110155041-phpapp01&stripped_title=15-b-overviewruthshumate&userName=rhshumate" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="355"></embed></object><div style="padding:5px 0 12px">View more <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/%22%3Epresentations%3C/a> from <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/rhshumate%22%3Erhshumate%3C/a%3E.%3C/div%3E%3C/div>

Thing 23 - The End

My favorite was shortening the URLs. I was familiar with most of the Things and have used most of them in one way or another. I would like to put some them to use in the library.
I had trouble with the Blogger software on my office computer and had to do most of my blogs from my home computer. I did the activities and waited to do the blog updates at home. The uploads and links wouldn't work on my office computer. The cloud stuff came in handy since I was using two computers. I might not have finished if I hadn't been home on sick leave,

As much as I hate writing on blogs, it was interesting to see other peoples response and creations. Very creative projects and names for their blogs! We have talent out there in the library field.

I am always interested in learning and would look forward to partipating in another series.

Thing 22- Podcasts

I am familiar with podcast and have created some using Camtasia. I searched for podcasts on library instruction using Google. Found some very interesting one done on everything from how to use the library catalog, databases and tours of the library facilities. Most didn't have the option of a RSS feed. I could use some of the podcasts by directing the student to some of them for extended explanations.

Thing 21 - Mashups

This was fun. Even tho I am grapically challenged. It makes it much easier when you the pre-design already there for you and you just plug in the information.

I created a trading card - of course I didn't use my photograph!

Thing 20 - Tagging and Social Bookmarking

I already have my bookmark organized in Windows 7 and it pretty useful. I can see that one of these services would be great for portability. It would be great for students to organize the internet research for projects although we try to steer them toward our databases first.

I like StumbleUpon because it can learn your likes and dislikes.

Our library organizes materials but we don't use social bookmarking services as far as I know.

Thing 19 - Multimedia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeCg1sff0HQ

I searched You Tube looking for multimedia created by Virginia Academic libraries.  I found several library tour videos and the one I chose the one UVA ILL department created give a tour of their ILL service. They did a great job on the video.
Sometimes there seems to be problems getting the video to load and play. YouTube techies can seem to keep up with volume.

Thing 18 - Audio Books

I read the article and I agree that there are too many formats that can be confusing. You have to have the right player for the chosen vendor. It can be confusing to some people.
Since I have use Overdrive, I chose to investigate LibriVox for the public domain. I search for Mark Twain, one of my favorite authors. It was fun! I used to use audio books when I made car trips but I got so involved in the books, my driving concentration suffered. Not good for others on the road!

I have a blind friend who loves all the new providers of audio content. It has given her so much pleasure!

Thing 17- Social Cataloging

I tried LibraryThing. I am a member of PaperbackSwap which is similiar in a way. It has discussions boards and reviews and chat rooms.
I find all of the entering and discussion takes away from my reading time.I hate writing so writing reviews would be a distressful thing for me.I appreciate those who do have the time to give their opinions. Maybe when I retire I will get more into social cataloging. I carry around a little notebook with lists of I what I want to read when I run across something when I am reading the journals for collection development.

Thing 16 -E-books

I love ebooks for research and quick information. But lots of our students are resistant to ebooks and I can not figure out why. They seem to want to have the printed format. Some of the faculty are still slow to come on board also by putting restrictions on format types.

I do not like to read on digital devices. It is hard on my eyes. One thing that bothers me are the restrictions on sharing. I love sharing and borrowing books from friends. I gave my Kindle to my sister. I do like books on tape for long car rides!

Thing 15 -Creative Commons

I can see how this would be very useful for student creating digital works for class projects. It would help with the copy right problems. It could be mentioned in library orientations but I doubt there would be enough time to to go into great detail. It seems there is more and more to try to cram into 40 minutes of library orientation.
It wasn't hard to search but the different rights might be confusing to some. I found several images that I could use and I searched some music that could be intergrated into presentations.

Thing 14 - Online Surveys

It is either the pain meds I am on or Blogger is problematic. I have trouble uploading things to my blog.
I created a library survey on Google docs. We use surveys in the library to gauge library particpation and usuage
.https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dGc5aVZ1bTRXQnJ2QVU5bU1qRVY4emc6MQ

Google has some pretty neat applications.

Thing 13 - Document Sharing

I  have been going thru cancer treatment. Much to my grief, cancer is treated by many doctors and other medical specialists. Keeping the appointments straight and nonconflicting takes a lot of effort so I created a calendar to share with all of them so they don't over lap.
I used the calendar feature in Google docs.

.Since we don't have an aquistions system in our library, it might be nice to share a spreadsheet among all the collection development staff so we can keep track of what is being ordered. Also useful when the librarians are creating documents together.

Thing 12 - Cloud computing

Well I have been using cloud computing for a long time and didn't know it was called cloud computing! Amazing what you can learn! I store all kind of stuff in the cloud! I called it online storage!

Thing 11 0-Shortening URLs

Now this was very useful! I love being able to compress those long URLS. It is so frustrating when you make one mistake in typing an URL that is several lines long and trying to figure out what went wrong. This could help me and students tremendously. I used with some of the database articles links and it worked like a charm.

Thing 10 -Twitter

I never felt like anyone could care what I was doing daily. I know I am boring and don't do exciting things.
I searched twitter on my favorite hobby "baking" and was extremely disappointed to find personal post by people posting weird comments that had the word baking in them. So I tried recipes and got cooking twitters from Paula Deen ( a favorite) and other chefs who posted twitters that reference some of their recipes and sites which I could have found searching the web also. I could see using twitter for promoting things and annoucements for organizations and events but I don't think I will posting anything on Twitter anytime soon if it is personal. It is just not my thing.

Thing 9.2 - Image Generator

I used ImageChef and created a Candy Heart in honor of Valentine's day. Of course it was posted late.

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more

This was fun!  I like Imagechef the best. It seemed the simplest to use for a graphically challenged person such as me.

Thing 9 - Photos and Images

http://www.flickr.com/photos/firdausmahadi/3019247224/
Finding images was very easy and quick. The only trouble I had was using blogger. I could post the link in the blog but the image uploader didn't work.

I love tigers and this photo with the tiger's tongue was too funny!

Thing 8 - screencasting

Ok after trying for 15 minutes blogger would not upload my screencast. I tried several times but kept getting an error message that was so helpful. " an error has been detected" I used screenmatic because we are allow to download anything which makes it hard to create projects because you are depending on the IT guys who are understaffed and overworked.  I probably need a java update!

I did create a screencast and it was pretty simple except recording the voice part is scary  and it is amazing how you can stand in front of a class and talk but in your office by yourself it is so hard to record yourself.

Thing 7 File Share

This might be useful. I didn't think the fileshare help was very useful. Apparently my powerpoints are too complicated because I couldnot upload them. I had to use a class exercise I created. It took over 15 minutes to upload the following power point and then only after multiple trys. I am stubborn and determined!!

Thing 6 - Chat

I hate blogging so much that I do several modules and then go back to do the blogs. How pathetic is that???

Chatting is NOT one of my favorite ways to communicate. It usually is so slow and no matter how great the comunication speed it is still problematic.

We use chat for reference and I find it very tedious especially with poor typists and it is takes too long to do a reference interview and the student gets frustrated. It would be so much better if we could co-browse but as it is I have to write explanations instead of demonstrating.

I have chatted in FaceBook and again much rather to be able to hear the voice  and see facial expressions so I have a clue if I am getting my point across.

Thing 5- Wikis

  • What so you think of the listed examples? Are they functional?
  • Is your library using a wiki?
    • If so, for what function?
    • If not, what internal projects at your library might benefit from using a wiki?
I like the the Book Lovers wiki. I like reading what average readers think of books in addition to what the critics think.
We use wikis in our library and for some of our college governance committees.  In the library, the wiki I use the most is the one set up for our library guides. We can communicate with librarians on other campuses about changes and the wiki notifies via email when a change has been made.

I think a wiki for collection development might be a good idea when you have several people selecting items. It would be nice if we could interface with our acquisitions vendor.

Thing 4: Social Networking and share your thoughts

I have been using social networks for about 3 years for personal reasons. It is the only way the younger generation in my family communicates so if I want to stay in touch it is FaceBook or nothing.
My niece homeschools and I use some of the social networking games with my great newphew. I incoporated math and language skills. He has to chat or email with me about his game stategies. I am finding he is bored with it after a year.

Since our students in the library are always on FB, I took an informal poll and ask them if they thought the library should be on FB. Out of the 75 or so I informally questioned, only one thought it might be okay. Most of the responses were very negative and said "FB was for social activties and not for education stuff" and "they hated how business and organizations were pushing their information and products" I would like hear and see if any libraries are sucessfully using FB for their libraries and how they are doing it.

Thing 3: RSS Feeds

This RSS might be useful if I could find some sites I might be interested in reading. I use the web for shopping and research not much for keeping with news. Most of my news is thru listservs that I joined. The reader seems to serve the same purpose.

I subscribed to Library of Congress classification by mistake - got to get rid of that one! It is for catalogers. Well I will have practice in deleting feeds. I decided to try a pop culture website - People.com and it was the easier to subscribe to. Some of the others were very confusing and too many options.

This could be usefull in notifying patrons of new materials if one knew how to set it up.

Thing 2: Getting Started / Web 2.0 Concepts

My second post and I am still not thrilled with blogging.

I started creating web pages with html code and since I had a programming background the code was easy. But I am graphically challenged so web design was not for me. My brother the art teacher would draw the design and I would write the code. It seems that everything is graphic now and it is so hard for me. White background and black text work for me!

23 Things - #1

Well, I have finally bit the bullet and created a blog. Woe is me! I hate to write and NOW I have a Blog. What has become of me! I will sacrifice for the advancement of Knowledge!
